The hero is faced with something that makes him begin his adventure. This might be a problem or a challenge he needs to overcome such as a cry for help as portrayed in the Hobbit. In the beginning of the Hobbit Gandalf brings Thorin and the dwarves to Bilbo's house. They need him to steal back their gold from Smaug, the dragon that destroyed Thorin's ancestral home and is hoarding all of the gold and treasures. Bilbo is to be the burglar who is charged with stealing the gold. Since this is an episodic journey Bilbo hears and answers other calls along the way. All are answered, but the central call that is focus of the story that leads to the climax (ordeal) is the call to steal the gold from Smaug
