They are faced with several "deaths" along the way. The first is with the trolls where they are rescued by Gandalf. Another is with the Goblins. More are seen with the wood elves and Smaug. Depending on how you see the climax the ordeal is different. Since in this example the climax is Bilbo's confrontation with Smaug, the ordeal can be seen with the dwarves "almost" death in the barrels. It seems as if they won't make it, but emerge unscathed, ready to reclaim Lonely Mountain as their own.

The Reward
After surviving death, the hero earns his reward or accomplishes his goal
Bilbo is rewarded multiple times along the way. Not only is he given the greatest gift, confidence gained through experience, but Bilbo is also rewarded with physical possessions that will aid him in his quest. Bilbo "finds" the ring of invisibility and the sword "Sting" is discovered in the trolls' cave. Both are critical to Bilbo's success
